Family Counseling
Better Relationships
Family counseling is designed to promote better relationships and understanding within a family. It may be specific to a certain situation within a family, as in counseling during a separation and divorce, illness, addiction, or any other issue that may be affecting the family in difficult ways.
Family counseling can– but does not have to occur with all members of the family unit present. It is often helpful to meet with individual members, or to meet with those members of the family that are having the most difficult time being in relationship with one another.
How Can I Help?
As a counselor I believe that most families need three things:
- An objective viewpoint
- Clear instructions on how to do things differently
- A lot of encouragement.
Ultimately, the counseling is part observation and reflection but it also has a strong educational and instructional component. It is essential that families and family members learn how to talk about what they feel, share what they want, and do it in positive ways. This often includes replacing old, negative communication patterns that most likely have become habits.
Family counseling can be done with separated and divorced partners where observations can be used to point out how poor communication, especially when filled with anger and strife between you, affects the behavior and happiness of your children. Children benefit from the safety that counseling offers. Here they have the opportunity to share things about their families and about what is going on — in ways that might not be allowed or safe in the family home.
